Final Update From Sierra-Marie On Church School Staffing

Dear Friends,

I am writing this note in my final 78 hours as your Director of Faith Development Ministries.  It has been a pleasure working with you!

Thank you to the many folks who have volunteered to ensure that your church has all of its planned Church School classes for children and youth next year.  You have come very close to a full team in all grades preK through 8th.  With just two more volunteers in the next few days (one in preK and one in 1st grade), you will be able to avoid having any canceled classes.

Can you do it?!

By taking on a nine-month year of teaching, you fulfill your responsibilities in a congregation with a Cooperative Church School.  The entire congregation owns and runs this school, and all parents are asked to volunteer to keep it going.  But, of course, you would also likely receive something in return:
  • You would form or deepen a relationship with one or more adults in the congregation.
  • You would form or deepen a relationship with one or more children in the congregation.
  • You would form or deepen your own theological understandings.
  • You would develop a deeper sense of connection to the church.
If teaching is not your style, I would alternatively encourage you to think about youth advising.  The church needs just four more youth advisors (one for middle school and three for high school) in order to keep the youth groups going in the fall.  Youth groups provide an opportunity for youth to develop leadership, have fun together, worship, learn, engage with congregants of all ages, and make a difference in the world.  You can help them do it!

I will be working all weekend.  If you are willing to speak more with me about these opportunities to get involved, please give me a ring at 508-757-2708 ext. 105.  After I leave, this will be the same number at which you can reach Jessica, the incoming Director.

I wish you well in the coming years.

Warmly and With Affection,
Sierra-Marie
(outgoing Director of Faith Development Ministries)

Volunteer Invitation

Here is an update on the volunteer situation your Cooperative Church School for next year.  I will no longer be with you as of July 31st, so at that point any classes that do not have the minimum size teaching team filled will be canceled and combined with other classes (in order to avoid leaving the new director responsible for finding the right volunteers to work with the classes).

Crunching numbers:

You need 7 more teachers in order to keep all your Church School classes (1 in preK, 1 in 1st grade, 1 in 4th-5th grade, 1 in 6th-7th grade, and 3 in 8th grade).  There are 21 days from the last time this has been updated and July 31st, so one of you will need to say "yes" every three days to get those slots filled.

You also need 4 more youth advisors (1 for middle school and 3 for high school), which means that one of you will need to say "yes" every five days in order to get those slots filled.

We have 325 members in this congregation, more or less, so 11 more volunteers is an absolutely do-able goal. We can do this! But if 325 people are under the impression that someone else will say "yes," the math won’t work. What it will take is for some of you to come forward and say, "Yes!  Yes, I would like to talk about whether this is the right volunteer match for me!"

The only number you need to remember is this: 1. You are 1 person who can talk with me about potentially volunteering. And that is more than enough.

Here is what you receive in return:
  1. You form or deepen a relationship with one or more adults in the congregation.
  2. You form or deepen a relationship with one or more children in the congregation.
  3. You form or deepen your own theological understandings.
  4. You develop a deeper sense of connection to the church.
You can contact me about volunteering by using the "contact" tab above or calling me at 508-757-2708 ext. 105.  Volunteer candidates fill out an application form, interview with me briefly, and receive a background check before being assigned a team.

Warmly,
Sierra-Marie
