No "Religious Education" Sunday This Year (June 5)

This Sunday's worship service is intergenerational.  Please bring the children!  Let's worship together as a community of all ages.

We will not be having a "Religious Education Sunday" this year. However, children will still be sent home with flowers this week, and 4th graders will still receive Bibles.

For Children and Youth: Sunday, May 29th

This Memorial Day weekend, our high schoolers will be at their annual spring retreat in Craigville on the cape.  Participants, please meetup at 3:30PM on Friday for a prompt departure.

Children in Spirit Play classes -- preK, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades -- will have a lesson on Sunday called "Flaming Chalice."  In this lesson, the Unitarian Universalist "promises" (principles of our covenant, or shared values) will be reviewed, and we'll explore what it means to live into those promises as a community.

Children in the all other grades, 3rd and up, will be attending an end of the year chapel service in which we also affirm the values of our community and consider the learnings in each class this year.

Teaching Materials

Please don't forget to return any teaching materials (curricula, etc.) that have been checked out to you.

You can return these items to the office of Faith Development anytime over the coming four weeks. If you are teaching the same class next year, and the class is using the same curriculum, you do not need to make a return.

Thanks,
Sierra-Marie

For Children and Youth: Sunday, May 22, 2011

Please note: Sierra-Marie G. (Director of Faith Development) will be away this Sunday.  In her absence, Cindy C. will be helping to make sure Sunday morning goes smoothly for our families with children and youth.

Spirit Play
PreKindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade Classes
This Sunday we will hear the story of a woman's life from her infancy through her old age.  The story is called "The Mystery of Beginnings and Endings" and provides an opening into universal wonderings about birth and death in human life.

Stepping Stone Year
3rd-4th Grade
This week, we will be introduced to Sophia Lyon Fahs, a Unitarian religious educator and collector of stories. Through her life story we will explore  as we explore the value of listening, searching, and wondering.

Bibleodeon
5th-6th Grade
In our second to last class (the group will have chapel the following Sunday, and we have an all ages worship service the week after that before our closing class celebration on June 12th), we will close our exploration of the Bible this year by considering the Bible's role in people's lives today.

**Reminder: 6th-8th graders participating in the BYKOTA middle school youth group are invited to an end of the year dinner on Friday, May 20th from 6:00-7:30PM.  We'll be eating a Chinese Food Feast, and our 8th graders will receive a graduation gift in a special ceremony.

Sacred Threads
7th-8th Grade
This Sunday, we'll talk about Shinto, the "native," pantheistic religion of Japan.  We'll be taking some travels through our church building during this class, as we consider the relationship between our environment and our spirituality.

YRU2 (High School Youth Group)
9th-12th Grade
Youth group is Sunday from 10AM-11:30AM.

BYKOTA End of Year Dinner

Our middle school youth will have their annual youth group "farewell dinner" this coming Friday, May 20th, from 6:00-7:30PM.  They will have a Chinese Food Feast in the Dining Room followed by a short worship service, including a special ceremony in which 8th graders are given an 8th grade graduation gift.

A permission form will arrive in your mailbox in the middle of this week.  There is no cost for this event, as some of the money raised during the Baked Potato Bar will be used to cover the cost of food.  We hope all our BYKOTA-participating middle school youth attend this event!

Please note that some youth have agreed to help with certain tasks such as compiling the food order and planning the worship service (which includes preparing an order of service).  Please check in with your youth about whether they have volunteered for any such tasks.

2011-2012 Registration

The 2011-2012 Registration forms for children and youth will be arriving in mailboxes as early as late next week.  This year, we ask that if you can register your children by June 5th, that you do so.  Registration forms serve a legal purpose in the life of any organization serving youth, and it is important in this year of staff transition that we take care of the legal formalities as early as possible.

Early registration also ensures:
  • We have the right numbers of materials for each class and program
  • We assign the right sized classroom or meeting space to each class and program
  • We have the right number of adult volunteers assigned to each class and program
  • We communicate relevant and helpful information to you in a timely manner
  • We communicate information to teachers and program leaders that will make for a safe and good transition into a new year of classes together

Summer Help Needed

Can you volunteer a few hours in May, June, or July to help get the Church School ready for next year?  Here are some projects for which we need volunteers:
  • Reorganizing the Church School supply closets
  • Inventory of supplies/preparation of restocking order
  • Restocking classroom supply bins
  • Reorganizing the classroom supply closets
  • Reorganizing the curriculum closet
  • Setting up our new 3rd grade classroom (modified Spirit Play)
  • Setting up the computer center in the new 3rd grade classroom
We need to complete these tasks by July 31st.  Teen volunteers who are required to do volunteer/service hours for school, etc. are also welcome to help out!  We can sign off on their work as needed!

Spirit Play
PreKindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade Classes

Thanks for your contributions!

...everyone who contributed food or money to the Carty Cupboard food pantry on Sunday.  Because of your help, we were able to bring the Carty Cupboard $540 and an abundance of groceries. This will help feed many neighbors when food supplies are at emergency levels in their homes.

If you missed the collection and would like to make a late contribution, please send checks to the church office, marked "BYKOTA Carty Cupboard" collection.

Sincerely From,
BYKOTA (Middle School Youth Group)
